Christian Fellowship Out at Sea

Some of my best Christian friends ever, were while serving in the United States Navy. Many people would be surprised to hear this as many sailors have gotten a rap of being “hell-raisers” for legitimate reasons. However, I served with some great Christians while serving on the USS Kitty Hawk out in the middle of the Indian and Pacific Oceans back in the early 80’s.

Christians seemed to attract to other Christians on a ship that had a crew of over 5000 sailors. So, what makes a Christian friend out at sea? Well, I guess the same thing that makes a Christian friend on shore. These were some friends you could share your faith with, encourage each other spiritually, pray with and discuss God with. There were bible devotions going on nightly when we were not busy working. The ship’s chaplain allowed us to have a bible devotion in the evenings in the ship library. Yes, the Kitty Hawk had a library. Those involved took turns leading the devotion. There were times your work kept you from attending, but when you could go it was always an uplifting time.

As Christians it is important to seek out Christian fellowship. There is a bond that is built between fellow Christians that will allow us to encourage each other in our faith. Some of my best faith-based discussions have been on the golf course with my friend James.

It can be tough in the hectic life we live in, but we need to try and carve out time to nurture our Christian relationships. If we, do you will find out you will help each other to live a life that glorifies God.

Hebrews 10:25

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Matthew 8:20

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.
