Nomads of YHWH
History has always been a fascinating subject to me throughout my life. Have you ever listened to a sermon that stays with you? My pastor gave a sermon that I have thought about several times lately. A couple of the portions of his sermon were fascinating to me not only for historical reasons, but also biblical reasons. They both had to do with the History of our faith in God.
The first thing that stuck with me was the title “Nomads of YHWH”. YHWH. Yahweh, the God of the Israelites, whose name was revealed to Moses as four Hebrew consonants (YHWH) called the tetragrammaton. “Nomads of YHWH” is the title that was given to the Israelites as they were led by Joshua prior to becoming the Kingdom of Israel. This title was inscribed on the “Cartouche of Amenhotep III”. His father Amenhotep II was believed by some biblical scholars to be the pharaoh during the Exodus. I found this fascinating that ancient
Egyptian Hieroglyphic inscriptions mentioned the “land of the nomads of YHWH”.
The second fascinating thing my pastor brought up, during this ancient period that the Israelites were called the “Nomads of YHWH” the Canaanites and Egyptians worshiped many gods or deities. The Ancient Egyptians worshiped over 1500 deities, and the Ancient Canaanites worshiped over 500 deities. Now out of all those gods worshiped in those ancient times, there is only one God that is still around. The same God the “Nomads of YHWH” worshiped. That is our God, our Lord, and Savior.
Isaiah 44:6,8 — Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Fear ye not, neither be afraid; have not I told thee from that time and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
