Never Take Your Own Revenge
One of my favorite pastors is Charles Stanley. A couple of years ago he had a great devotion for us to never take our own revenge. It spoke to my heart, and I wanted to share it with you.
Why do we have such a hard time extending forgiveness to others? Perhaps one reason is that it doesn’t seem right. Justice demands that there be repayment or punishment for wrongdoing. However, we are not the ones who have the authority to retaliate. To do so amounts to trying to take control of something that God should have, which is just as sinful as what was done to us.
This vengeful attitude is evident in the hearts of many—sadly, including Christians. So, let’s uncover the truth behind it. This destructive landmine of unforgiveness demonstrates an unwillingness to extend to others the forgiveness the Lord has graciously extended to us.
Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
This plants a root of bitterness in our heart, which poisons us, causes trouble, and defiles others.
Hebrew 12:15
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
Hinders God’s sanctifying process in our life, because we grieve the Spirit by holding onto anger, resentment, or vengeance.
Ephesians 4:30 -31
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
Instead of demanding justice now, Paul encourages us to bless and do good to those who persecute us. We can never overcome evil with sinful attitudes and actions, but only with good. For now, we must trust God and leave vengeance to Him.
