“Peter an Ordinary Man”

Isn’t it amazing how God can take an ordinary person with faults and empower them into a person whom He can use. I think of Jesus’ Disciple, Peter. Peter was a simple fisherman who had few other skills. The thing that set Peter apart from others. He was willing to hang up his fishing nets and follow Jesus.

Was Peter perfect? No, he wasn’t, just like us, we are not perfect. Peter made some mistakes in his following of Jesus. He almost drowned when he took his eyes off Jesus. He denied Jesus three times when Jesus was taken captive before His crucifixion.

Luke 22:61-62

61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Although Peter had his disappointments, he also had his triumphs. Peter went on to be the rock that the early church was built on.

Matthew 16:18

18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

As Christians we can take great inspirations in Peter. Jesus looks for believers who are teachable, willing to repent, and prepared to surrender to God’s greater will—despite their weaknesses and failures.

God isn’t interested in qualifications. He seeks willing followers who echo Isaiah’s call: “Here am I. Send me!”

Isaiah 6:8

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
