Materialism Can Be a Trap

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

Have you ever been trapped by your possessions? Does it seem like it takes more and more effort keeping track of things you own, while still making mental notes of what you intend to buy. Some of us might never have experienced this; however, most of us if we are truthful have had to deal with this to a certain extent. My title is “Materialism can be a Trap”, this can be so true. The love of acquiring possessions can be a slippery slope.

God has blessed us with material things that has made our life a lot easier. Having material things is great, but the bible clearly tells us that the love of money can be a dangerous path.

Luke 12:15 (NIV)

15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

We live in a society that teaches us to honor possessions. The bible teaches us to honor God. As followers of Christ we need to never get too attached to acquiring stuff to the point we develop the love of money. The bible tells us is that Earthly riches are here today and gone tomorrow. Our real riches are stored up in Heaven and this is where we should focus our thoughts and energy.

Proverbs 11:28 (NIV)

28 Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
